Why are you looking up reviews of this? It's one of the defining games of its generation, it shaped the action-adventure genre into what it is today, and every gamer worth their weight in quarters will tell you the same. Go download it.

A blend of a sidescrolling platformer, an overhead shooter, and a city sim that has you, as God (yes, literally) rebuilding and repopulating the destroyed planet so that you can reacquire your lost powers, drive all the demons from the earth and eventually defeat the devil himself. While all of this goes on, you get treated to some of the best music the SNES platform ever had in its repertoire. One of the best games from the tragically short-lived Quintet.
So where are Soul Blazer, Illusion of gaia and Terranigma already, dudes? Get that kickass trilogy on there! score: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Oh hell yeah. One of the best games in the entire series, Castlevania 4 is an excellent remake of the original title. Konami went all out to make this one take advantage of the SNES' hardware - colorful graphics, scaling and rotating sprites, expansive stages, enormous bosses, excellent music, and several new tricks you can do with your whip, from swinging on obstacles to whipping in any direction to spinning it to block projectiles and hit tiny enemies. Of course, the game still provides plenty of challenge, but in the good way - there are much fewer cheap shots knocking you into pits and brute-force boss tactics to be found here.

Zelda gets turned into a 2D sidescrolling platformer and meshed with some RPG elements. You'll have to grind experience points to increase your health, magic gauge or attack power, talk to townspeople to get clues about where items and dungeons are located, and deal with some annoying obstacles (like enemies that drain your experience points) and treacherous platforming sections. But hey, at least it avoided the trap Castlevania II fell into; almost every clue you're given actually makes sense and has relevance within the context of the game.
Fun fact: If you're clever with the Fairy spell, you can use it to sneak through locked doors without a key. Just be careful not to get trapped without enough magic to get back out, though. score: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

There hasn't been a new VC release in over a month. Goddamnit. Oh well, here's a few reviews for stuff I've been playing lately.
Another rare SNES gem made available for cheap on Virtual Console. Final Fight 3 plays much like its predecessors, but adds in a handful of Street Fighter-esque moves and special moves that can do a ton of damage when used properly (Guy's fireball can shred half a bosses' lifebar when perfectly timed). Great fun, especially with two players. The only downside is the game's really bland, low-tempo soundtrack. score: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Ah, Final Fantasy IX. The game that promised to make up for the outrageous letdown that was Final Fantasy 8, to put Square back on track after they derailed and made one lousy, bug-ridden compilation after another, the game that would finally let us forget about lousy shit like Ehrgeiz and step back to the simple yet elegant style that won our hearts over in the 8 and 16-bit eras. Too bad this return to the road of light wouldn't last and they'd derail down the dark path of no return with Final Fantasy X, Unlimited Saga, Samurai Legend Musashi, Kingdom Hearts 2 and countless other games so bad they made us fear electricity.
Oh, sorry. I got off track there. It's on PSN for $10. Go get it. score: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

An awesome over-the-shoulder shootemup in the vein of Sin and Punishment (one of my all-time favorites) set in the wild west... with giant robots that you get to blow up! If that's not the greatest combination of anything ever, I don't know what is. Oh, and it supports two players too. Kick. Ass. What, you're still here? Go download the damn thing! 800 Wii Points is a steal for this overlooked gem. score: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Revenge of Shinobi is probably most famous for its bosses, many of which are copied directly from other properties; the game's original version contained bosses resembling the Spider-Man, Batman, and even Godzilla, all of which were altered in subsequent revisions to avoid copyright issues. The Virtual Console version is no exception to this rule - Spider-man is recolored pink, Batman is edited into a creature that resembles Devilman, and Godzilla is now just a generic skeleton.
Frequent edits aside, Revenge of Shinobi is a fun, very challenging platformer with great visuals and sounds, and one of the Sega Genesis' defining games. Hell, it would still be fun even if all the bosses were edited into pink Care Bears. score: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Two Capcom arcade classics in one package - Magic Sword, something of a combination of Rastan's sidescrolling action and Gauntlet's frenetic gameplay, and Final Fight - one of the biggest and best sidescrolling brawlers ever made. Both also have unlockable artwork (both official and fan-made), fully supported online play that allows a second player to jump in or drop out at any time, and most hilariously, a complete episode of the USA Street Fighter cartoon featuring Final Fight. And thankfully, all of the unlockable items are relatively simple - no bullshit like beating the game on hard mode in one continue.
Get it on Xbox Live or PSN, your choice. But be sure to get it! score: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
