A significantly upgraded version of Starflight, with a personally-driven narrative, a great soundtrack and intense real-time combat atop the already excellent exploration-driven gameplay. It starts off a bit slow, but it really ramps up in fun once you get to explore the huge universe the developers have set up for you. If that sounds like your bag, pick this one up right away. Just stay away from the third game - it's a complete insult to the great game that came before it.

The last game in the ever-convoluted Wonder Boy series, which spun off into a sub-series called Monster World and also spawned the Adventure Island series from its initial entry. It's all very confusing, but one thing remains constant - they're fun platforming games, usually with a slight RPG twist. Monster World 4 continues the legacy started by Dragon's Curse and Wonder Boy in Monster World, providing some impressive visuals and refined mechanics to make it arguably the best in the entire series. It's also the only game in the series that never got a western release until now, and it even comes fully translated, so if platforming combined with a bit of gold-grinding to upgrade equipment and buy items is your thing, give it a go!

Ultima 8 may have been an unmitigated disaster, but at least something decent was salvaged from its source code - that being the isometric overhead shooters Crusader: No Remorse and its sequel, Crusader: No Regret. Featuring some impressive visuals and music, as well as several cruel and creative ways to dispatch your foes (electrified floors, force fields, exploding barrels, and so on) and even a bit of creative puzzle-solving, they're both fun games with some great atmosphere. If you can get used to the awkward control setup, there is plenty of fun to be had at a low price with Crusader.

Skullgirls is an amazing game. One which features a unique visual style with fluid animation, some really inventive character designs, an excellent sense of humor, and gameplay mechanics easily on par with any big-name fighting game out there. Plus hell, they even introduce quite a few mechanics and tutorials to the game to help ease you into the genre if you don't fancy yourself a die-hard fighting game fan. If you're at all a fan of fighters or you're looking to jump on board, go buy Skullgirls right this minute. You will not regret it.

The sequel to Thief, making numerous improvements to the gameplay (like mouse wheel support), adding new enemies (mostly mechanical in nature) and several useful new gadgets. It's more fun in the dark and twisted atmosphere of The City, and arguably even surpasses its predecessor in overall quality. Check it out.

While it may not be the first stealth-oriented game, it's arguably the one that took the formula to perfection. Thief is all about evading combat, because your enemies are confirmably much stronger than you - get sighted and you'll probably be overwhelmed and killed unless you use a Flash Bomb or some fancy maneuvering to escape. Combine that with goal-oriented gameplay (not unlike Goldeneye, released the same year as this), some genuinely creepy enemies and environments and some absolutely massive levels to explore, and you've got a very fun experience. The engine may be pretty damn ugly by today's standards, but the gameplay is unmatched.

When the Simpsons didn't suck and was at the height of its popularity in the early 90s, Konami produced an arcade beat-em-up, and it's still a damn good one. Four-person multiplayer, online co-op, and tons of gameplay modes (including ones that have all players draw from a limited pool of credits and a "hardcore mode" that gives you exactly one life to finish the game). A damn fine nostalgia rush.

I will readily admit that I don't see the overwhelming fanboy hype behind Cave Story (some even declaring it the BEST GAEM EVAR##@35*#@^!!!!) or why people get so utterly defensive about whatever slight and ultimately inconsequential changes were added to the latest release, but I will say this: it is a solid platformer with some elements of Metroid, and the DSiWare version is about as close to the original PC release as you can get. No changed graphics or music to be found, it's pretty much the exact same game. So if you want a faithful, no-frills portable version of Cave Story, pick it up. If not, stick to the PC version, it's free.

Fun platformer with no actual jumping (just gravity-flipping), some very creative level design, an excellent soundtrack, and some pretty hefty challenge. The 3DS version even includes numerous fan-made levels, which gives PC version players a reason to check this version out as well. So if you love platformers as much as I do, this one is well worth the $7 asking price.

More or less a remake of the NES version of Bionic Commando, just with a futiristic motif and a password system included. No complaints here!
