For a moment, I thought I've sent this pic here, but it somehow slipped my mind.

My next project could be what my New Year's Resolution needed; a chance to get the fire back in the belly as well as to go back through the strips and make a better story (with better artwork) out of it. It'll be published by Lulu and have a bit of a Wizard of Oz feel: Jim's world is in Anime-style screentones thanks to a bunch of textures and brushes from here in DA, and Scarlet's world will be in technicolor.

All of the strips I'm reusing for the Remix version will be inked as well, and I'm going to order a Pilot Disposable fountain pen just for the occasion. [link]

Since Screentones obviously don't shrink very well, posts on pages here will be very limited. But then again, I am making this comic with the intent on publishing it, am I?

You seem to go back and restart stories over and over. How often do you finish the race rather than just stopping partway through and walking back to the starting blocks?

I'd suggest outlining the story you want to tell on paper, following major plot points, and then tell that without getting bogged down in details that eventually bog the stories down.

Yeah. It's a major problem of mine. Fortunately, I did the outline of both books I've published so far and managed to finish both of them. But I fear that I haven't been able to effectively do the same for comic strips. I guess I can chalk this under "Lesions to learn."

I'll be sure to do that not only with SPIR, but with the current strip I have right now.

(Besides, I pretty much have the outline for SPIR more or less already. I just needed to fill in the missing gaps.)

One thing I've noticed about the quality of your work is that you often leave alot of static around your lines (look at how rough they are, this is unprofessional). If you want to sell it, or even have it taken seriously, I'd say you need to simply take these images, trace them, and color the tracings.

But you don't have a tablet do you? You should get one if you are serious about your art, its an indispensible investment. Also, what program do you use to color and ink your work?

I use Gimp for my picture editing, especially with the coloring duties. I usually ink by hand.

Maybe it's the low dimensions I have to work with using the web comic format. If there's anyone who's willing to donate a tablet for commissions, or even pay some commissions for me to get the money to buy one, I greatly appreciate it. I'd get one if i had the money. It's the usual complaint from me.

Well you don't need a tablet to make pictures really. It just helps. I don't think anyone is going to give you their tablet, I'm sorry, you might just have to save up and buy it with your own hard-earned money. I got mine for my birthday, so enlisting the help of a relative might not be a bad idea.

And I see, so you up the contrast until its pure black and white? A very common technique, but you can't just stop there. Again, the lines look rough and unfinished. Make a new layer and trace over the original picture, then color it. It will look better.

There's also a technique I've just heard about, where you take a illustration program (Illustrator/Inkscape/Draw Plus) and convert the lineart to vector lines. I'll be using that technique in the remix pages.

I've been wondering why you never seem to shade and highlight you're colored art....

I think it'd look better with shading and highlights, it adds more dimension, especially when you want to contrast two types of coloring as you seem to do here.

Also, I've been wondering. I use Photoshop myself so I'm all into layers and using Multiply to color my lineart. Does Gimp have layers too? I think you could benefit from something like that.

Hmm. Good question. It's probably caused by a lack of a tablet, needed time, and (I suspect this is the official reason) laziness. I'll be sure to work with the shade and highlight in the comic pages. (Unless I can find a decent colorer, of course.)

And yes Gimp does have layers, something I've been working with with the colored pages. I just hope I can find the patience and time I need to put in the dimensions.

Hey! Layers are the most wonderful things ever invented by man. If you screw the shades just erase the layer and start all over again. Man if Gimp has layers the world is yours, they are perfect for shading and highlighting. They are also pretty good for preserving your lineart. How do you start coloring? do you use the fill bucket or do you duplicate the lineart layer and then use Multiply to make it transparent and color UNDER it?

Also, for the lineart, to make it look less jarring and also to preserve details and pencil or ink shading I usually scan it in Greyscale and never in black and white and use the Adjust Levels tool to get rid of the excess grey or darken my blacks. It's insanely useful.

I used to use the fill bucket, but I'm beginning to make my line art "black over transparent" so I can put a second transparent lineart underneath so I can get to those "Hard to Bucket Fill" layers easier. I figure with the Remix comic, I'll do this with the pages:

Top layer "Lineart"
Then a copy of the top for the coloring,
A third blank one for nitpicks
A fourth for the backgrounds
and finally a fifth that's white for a base color.

What say you?

Transparent top layer lineart is the best. But I never usually put all the coloring in one layer. I usually pick the basic color and then make additional layers to do shading and then highlighting. If I don't like the shading I erase the layer and start over, if I want a higher contrast for the skin of a character but not for his clothing then I just select the skin layer and tweak that without worrying about the rest of the coloring. Keeping colors and sections separated helps experiment.

And if you're coloring under the transparent layer, one color at the time you can be as messy as you like and that helps when deciding things like where the light source is, what textures you want... Something like this [link]

As another Gonterman strip comes to a close, we learn that at his current age of 42, Dave has yet to improve upon anything he was capable of creating at age 26, his artwork and storytelling techniques trapped in some sort of inexplicable, unchanging limbo. But most of all, we learn that he's apparently proud of this fact!

The art does show improvement in places, but rarely for long. Some panels look okay, but then the very next one on the very same page will look awful. Maybe he should just abolish his imaginary "deadlines" and spend as much time as he needs on each page.

He seems to have largely abandoned art and gone back to writing instead. As for whether that's a good thing or not.. I honestly can't say, since almost everything he's posted requires payment, and the thought of paying money for a Gonterman product just doesn't sit right with me.

It took me long enough, since I went through the task of inking the Scarlet PI Comic Book, but I managed to get back into the online comic with this transition strip. The raid of one of the HFL hideouts begins.

Oh, and this is the first public strip I made using the new Draw Plus X2 program. The upgrade even includes a spell checker, which will keep most of the errors you'll find at bay.

Now then, once the tablet I ordered from Serif would come here, things will be perfect.

That is some crazy colloquialism.

I try. The hardest part is to have Pippkin's British accent presentable on the page. Success in this depends on what day of the week it is. :/ But I hope I'd get it right by the time I get to Pippkin in the comic book version of this story.

Well thats all fine and good, but try not to let it distract too much from the story.

It could be just me, but reading books and literature with that kind of dialog always trips me up, and I forget what's going on.

all of the story are very good.
when come the next part?

I hope soon. I got swamped some time back . . . okay, over a year or two back, but you know what happens when life kicks you in the butt. I'm considering going over the origin story and making it a Nanowrimo project for this November.

A little later than I expected, but better late than never.

As some of you seen if you seen my in-site Blog, I'm giving the SPIR comic another month to complete. That's because I have purchased an upgrade to my Draw Plus program (to it's latest version, X2) and I want to use that for that project. I hope I could get that $300 check from the IRS so I can add a tablet into the mix. Already got my eyes on a good inexpensive one too.

Hey, Mr. Gonterman. Just like to say I'm a long-time fan, first time writer.

I've gotta say, your art/writing inspired me to wield the pen/keyboard/what-have-you once more, after getting only a 70% in Grade 9 art class....

My fave of yours has to be your old Blood and Metal series, mostly because, IMHO, it's one of those "It's my fantasy world, so I'll be saving it today, thank you so very much." I have daydreams about things like that every day.

Getting off the praise, I like the comic so far...and if I may make a small suggestion for the tablet?

Try a Wacom Bamboo Tablet. It's what I use, it's pretty cheap, running at around $159 CDN. Dunno the price in USD though, sorry.

The tech guy said that it was getting obsolete though...so you mightn't be able to find the blasted thing. But if you can get one, I'd recommend them.

Thanks for your time in reading this, and keep on keeping on, Mr. Gonterman!

I finally got myself a new tablet from Serif. It's Wacom based, and I think it's similar to the Bamboo. I hope to get some good use out of it soon

Yeah, good luck and all. I still use a pencil most times though, due to space constraints. Turns out that matter will not bend to my will just because I threaten it with violence, who knew?

Actually, I'd like to revise my earlier statement about my favourite work of yours, Mr. Gonterman, or David, I suppose.

I just read your MSTing of the Burned Fur Manifesto.

One overwhelming question: How can I do one of these?! This is amazing! Not just 'cause you and your friends made it so, but because I've dreamed of doing something so epic to a piece of writing that just begs for it. IE half the things I've seen on fanfic.com. They ruined Mass Effect for me, and they should be flamed into dust.

So...any feedback on how I can do a MSTing of my own would be greatly appreciated, David.

Should I just go into a corner and fan-boy over there now?

The main tip I would do about MSTing would be to remember that "It's just a show," and that they didn't do anything like crashing planes into towers. More often than not fan-made MSTings are little more than just direct attacks at the writer of the MiST's target, and they are not veiled at all. I speak from personal experience, being the target of several such MSTings. And at times I even get it during IMs.

The trick is to parody the text file itself and not attack those writing it. You'll notice that I've never attacked the writer of that Manifesto, but rather kept my sharp wit aimed at the subject matter. In fact, if you read along, you'll find me actually _agreeing_ with the writer. You don't have to see just my one MiSTing, you can watch the actual series and find examples of that. Very Rarely to Mike and Joel turn their venom on the people making the cheezy movies, and even then, you don't hear them calling out for their lulzy deaths.

The bottom line on what you should do is this: Laugh _with_ the writer, not _at_ the writer.

So...to phrase that as a simile "Love the sinner hate the sin" sorta deal.

I can see what you're getting at, mate. Basically, just poke fun at the artwork/writing/whatever, but leave the writer out of it. It's all in the name of good, clean fun, so don't be a jackass.

Unless of course the writer did crash a plane into a tower.

It seems to me to be like a text version of "Video On Trial." I doubt you've heard of this, as it's a Canadian program broadcasted in Canada, and you are neither of those things. Look it up on YouTube, it's a really neat watch.

And thanks for the watch on my account and your advice. Let's see if I can get a MSTing up here before too long.

Thanks again.

Exactly. The last thing we need is people to read your MiSTing and get the wrong idea about the author of the piece you're working over. I had people hate me because of 'my' MiSTing of literary craps like SMAK. Emphasis on the word 'my' and 'MiSTing,' as if I actually wrote the MiSTing. While you can't keep everyone from basing their views on someone through second--or eleventh--hand information, it's something to keep in mind that should be avoided as much as you can.

Alrighty then, I'll try to keep all this in mind. I suppose you can look forward to a MiSTing of my very own sooner of later then, David. [/shameless self-promotion]

On a side note, I find it rather funny that people thought you MiSTed your own work, as SMAK was yours right? (Correct me if I'm wrong) Why the hell would you MiST your own work? That's like a chef being the food critic for his own dish.

I believe this is called a paradox. I also believe it was covered in the fifth Artemis Fowl novel. I have no idea where I was going with this.

Thanks again, David.

Making fun of the author in a MST is loosely acceptable, but only if it's funny. And not too mean-spirited.
 ~Spoony Spoonicus  §  at 03:21pm 07/30/11

Outright hostility is unavoidable in some cases, though. Especially when it comes to stuff as bad as Shit Piece.

I also like how he tries to imply that SMAK - one of the most infamously awful fanworks of all time and something he gets a ton of backlash for to this day - isn't his doing. Did anyone seriously think SMAK was someone else's work and "his" MSTing of it was what caused him to become an internet pariah?
 ~Mayor Mike Haggar  §  at 03:22pm 07/30/11

I thought the "Amusement Park Mode" thing was already established. Several times, in fact!

Also, he seems to like to shift blame for SMAK's infamy onto the MSTers, rather than the person who actually penned all the racist, homophobic and generally horrible crap within it (I.E. himself). It's one thing to admit that you made a dumb mistake and try to atone for it, it's quite another to deny all responsibility in the face of a mountain of evidence and point fingers at everyone else involved in some desperate attempt to salvage your public image!

I know the mentioned series actually have several translated names, and of course it's speculative what will the official one would be. I just picked a translated name for the strip.

And with this out of the way I can--I hope--work on some of the other projects I have in my To-Do list. Provided I can pry myself away from my new toy, the Playstation Portable.

But there is one thing I am considering. I do wish to make a second revision of Lost Boy Found, but I also considering how to do the rework of the Scarlet PI origin story. One person suggested that I remake it as a comic book format, instead of an illustrated story, And I had a good idea of making everything Black and White (inked, this time, since it's destined for LuLu) except for Scarlet, Pippkin, the lives they affect, and even HFL, where they go into full color a la "Wizard of Oz".

What say you?

The colour idea is a good one, I think it would work very well with your style!

So at what point do you think it would go all colour?

I'll be starting over from the beginning. I wanted to take the opportunity to rework the story, to make it better, for some time now, and I just needed a better excuse. My new year's resolution would be just the reason I'm looking for.

It doesn't mean that I won't stop making strips here, though. I just want to make a better recap.

And that sounds like a great idea, I've really enjoyed the series thus far, and would love to see what you'd do with it the second time around!

I wish you luck!

You would probably be looking too much into the bottom panel, at least in Scarlet's mind. She just think Melody's cute and wants to take her home. At least she's not _that_ perverted.

Took me long enough did I? To be honest, I was suffering a combination of 1) getting busy with Blood and Metal, and 2) having Net Connections so bad I had to call up for a technician. (I do hope I can switch to AT&T Hi-Speed in 2008) If I had more time to devote to these strips, I might have a temporary side story focusing on Magical Girl Melody.

But then again, I do need to work on artwork for the Blood and Metal web site, to show how Eric Krockett looks and have some pictures to go with the image of Maatla I have.

(BTW, I'd like to thank the two of you who bought a copy of 'Murder in Main Street USA,' Each and every one of them is important to me )

hope to buy a copy soon. really wanna read that. jus been tough.

Uh oh HFL is IN FOR IT!!!

Why pay perfectly good money for a Gonterman work? Just wait a week and you can find it on the Internet in its full glory, MSTed to high heaven.

Well, gee. Melody's face is actually drawn pretty decently in that last panel. It's almost as if Gonterman were looking at a reference of some sort while he was drawing her! Not that he'd keep that up, of course.

People said that the last strip was a bit too rushed. I hope I didn't produce the same result here. I have to admit that I was more focused on getting Murder in Main Street published, which will happen this coming weekend, and getting sterious on Blood and Metal. People said that I'm spreading myself a bit too thin. They might be right.

Nevertheless, here is the start on Melody's training in being a Magical Girl. You might think Magical Girl Melody is something of a Shojo Metal Gear Solid which was the main idea, but I digress.

Hmm . . . interesting pretense, certainly enough. I think you could benefit from a little more focus on depth and anatomy, though; the characters seem a bit flat, and the facial features are crowded.

Also, you seem to be having the same problem with your scanner that I do: what was white on paper comes out in shades of grays. Next to the stark white of the text boxes, the art looks a little dingy. Try playing with the contrast options to get it to come out all white and black.

But wow, 116 pages? That's prolific!

Well, that's 166 overall. Over a couple years time. Not as prolific as you'd think.

While I appreciate the tips, especially with the scanner, I must admit not to focus more on the strip as I should, especially with the artwork. I'm more focused on the storyline so I can bridge the comic into the novels nowadays. I hope that, in a future time, I can go back--or have someone else do so--and rework the comic strip into a better style and format.

Thanks for the good words and advice regardless and I hope you check in with my DA page more.

Ughhh, Gonterman baby-talk. As if this turn of events weren't already painful enough to endure.

Sorry, we seem to have slipped into a pilot for a completely different series here. Bear with us for a moment.

Oh, so her outfit is black. What was all that crap about it being some dark colour, but not black? And is it just me, or does that outfit keep changing?
