The first two games in the legendary Ys series on one package. It would have been a great deal at the time if it didn't come out on an expensive addon for an system almost nobody bought! Fortunately, this obscure compilation is now available to a much wider audience, so pick it up and enjoy some classic 16-bit action. Then go grab up Oath in Felghana, Ark of Napishtim and Ys Seven for the PSP for even more good times.

It's five-player Gauntlet. That's all there really is to say about it. Overhead shooting, dungeons with infinitely respawning monster points, potions that either grant you invincibility for a short period or teleport you out of the dungeon completely - it's Gauntlet. It's a good time in multiplayer, but alone it gets dull and repetitive pretty quickly. The loud, grating, two-second loop that they generously call "music" doesn't do it any favors, either.

The third of the Wonder Boy games remade for the Turbo Grafx 16 (this one being a conversion of Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair - not to be confused with the Other Wonder Boy III game, Dragon's Curse), and also the earliest released, when the genre hadn't yet made the transition from platforming to action-RPG. What we get here is basically an autoscrolling platformer with a variety of sidescrolling shoot-em-up weaponry - think Adventure Island meets Gradius. Strangely, this was also the only version of this particular game to see release in North America - the original Genesis version never saw a release here. Still, it is a unique and fun fusion of two genres, and the catchy music only sweetens the deal. Give it a try.

Another Turbo Grafx conversion of a Wonder Boy game, this time Wonder Boy III: Dragon's Trap. Once again, aside from some redone visuals and audio, it's pretty much identical to its Sega Master System counterpart. But that's not much to complain about, as it's another fun sidescrolling action-RPG, and for six bucks you get a pretty good amount of entertainment from it.

Ah, Wonder Boy. One of Sega's earliest flagship franchises, and a series with a convoluted history that spans several genres, from platformers to sidescrolling shooters to sidescrolling action RPGs somewhat reminiscent of Zelda II. Dynastic Hero is an update of Wonder Boy in Monster World with redesigned enemies and Redbook audio music. Aside from that, though, it's pretty much identical to its Sega Genesis counterpart - sidescrolling platforming with some light RPG elements. For what it is, though, it's pretty damn fun. Give it a shot!

Dungeon-crawling fun on the Sega Genesis of the super old-school variety - that means hand drawing maps and grinding out a lot of levels to make progress in the game (or you could just cheat and look up all the maps online, I suppose, but where's the fun in that?). If that sounds good to you, give Shining in the Darkness a try.

It seems I'm one of only a few who actually prefers Secret of Evermore over Secret of Mana. To me, SoM always just seemed overly long and very padded out (almost every boss and enemy sprite gets recycled and palette swapped at least once), plus the buggy partner AI didn't do it any favors either, with you constantly having to unstick characters who get hung up on corners and resurrect them after they get killed running into the same enemy attack over and over again. Still, SoM does have one advantage that SoE does not - a multiplayer option for up to three players. If you can get a three player game going, it's a pretty damn good time. Otherwise, well, if you don't mind a lot of padding and having to babysit two idiotic AI partners, you can get some fun out of this one.

Good lord, the AI in this game was awful. Characters getting stuck on trees and walls was a pain in the ass and really slowed things down. The multiplayer bit was awesome, though, and now that it's on VC you don't have to go out and buy a multi-tap to use it. Hooray! The music was really damned good, too. SoM is a decent game, but it's not what some people make it out to be. I think I'd be playing more Evermore than this, too.

The fourth Final Fantasy game made, the second one released in the US, and it had three or four different versions on the SNES alone. Confusing, I must say. But that aside, it's a solid example of RPGs of the era, with a dark storyline and some fantastic music that remains among the best of the series. It does get a bit slow and drawn out in some spaces, and the challenge has been drastically reduced from the Japanese versions (even considering that region's "Easy type" version of the game), but it's still much better than any of its lame remakes, and well worth checking out for JRPG fans.

Believe it or not, there was a time when Natsume made more than just wave after wave of Harvest Moon sequels. They made some pretty damn good action games too, most notably Shatterhand, SCAT and this one, Wild Guns. An arcade-style shooter wherein you must evade enemy attacks by utilizing double jumps and dodge rolls and, of course, blow up everything on the screen with heavy firepower, mostly consisting of cowboys and giant robots. It's a damn good time, and even serves as a bit of an early precursor to Sin and Punishment, one of my all-time favorite games. Definitely worth checking out at $8.

One of the greatest RPGs of all time. Not only that, but you get Part II: The Serpent Isle, and the Forge of Virtue and Silver Seed expansion packs all for only six bucks. It's the best damn bargain the site's ever had.

What, you're still here? Get over to Good Old Games and download it.

Now we just need Savage Empire and Martian Dreams and we'll be golden. No need to worry about Ultima 8 or 9, they're both pretty damn crappy.
